Tollgrade

Tollgrade Communications, of Cranberry Township in the Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania, built network service assurance systems for telephone operators in the United States and Europe. Its test hardware sat in the exchange and measured the copper loop out to the subscriber, letting an operator establish whether a reported fault lay in the network or on the customer premises without sending an engineer, which is the entire economics of loop testing. The company later extended the same idea into broadband and smart grid monitoring, and was taken private by Golden Gate Capital in May 2011.
