Pirelli, the Italian group founded in Milan in 1872 and known worldwide for tyres, built a substantial cables business alongside it and from there moved into optical fibre and optical components. Its telecommunications arm produced fibre, transmission systems and pluggable optics for carrier and enterprise networks, a line of work that ran for decades before the group refocused on tyres.
