Check Point Software Technologies was founded in Israel in 1993 and effectively created the commercial firewall market with FireWall-1, followed by VPN-1 for encrypted site to site and remote access links. Its software ran on appliances built by other manufacturers for years, most visibly the Nokia IP Series, which paired Check Point software with Nokia hardware and the IPSO operating system. Check Point acquired that Nokia security appliance business in 2009 and has built its own appliance ranges since.
