Extreme Networks acquired the wireless LAN business from Zebra Technologies in 2016, bringing the former Motorola/Symbol AP and WiNG controller portfolio into its current product range. Extreme also acquired Enterasys Networks, the successor to Cabletron Systems, in 2013; that heritage is catalogued under Enterasys and Cabletron.
Cabletron, Enterasys and Extreme Networks: the campus switching line
One product heritage runs through three company names, plus the DEC network hardware that joined it early on.
1998: Cabletron acquired the network hardware business of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). DEC-numbered network modules are catalogued under Cabletron.
2000 to 2001: Cabletron reorganised and its enterprise networking lines continued as Enterasys Networks.
2013: Extreme Networks acquired Enterasys and the product lines continued under the Extreme name.
Tech-Star catalogues each part under its original badge: see Cabletron and Enterasys.
Symbol, Motorola, Zebra and Extreme Networks: the wireless LAN line
The Symbol wireless LAN portfolio has changed hands three times, and units in the field carry any of four badges.
2007: Motorola acquired Symbol Technologies.
2014: Motorola Solutions sold its Enterprise business to Zebra Technologies.
2016: Extreme Networks acquired the Zebra wireless LAN business (WiNG controllers and access points). Scanners and printers stayed with Zebra.
Only the wireless LAN line reached Extreme Networks; the rest of the former Symbol portfolio remains with Zebra. Tech-Star catalogues each part under its original badge: see Symbol and MOTOROLA.
